From In house Composer, Drew Ashby -” Scoring The Birth of Trap Music wasn’t just about underscoring a story—it was about honoring a living, breathing culture that reshaped music globally. As a composer on this film, I approached the score as a bridge between eras: capturing the raw, unfiltered energy of early Atlanta trap while expanding its emotional and cinematic depth for a new context.

The documentary moves through more than just history—it dives into survival, innovation, and identity. My role was to translate those layers into sound. That meant pulling from the core elements that define trap—808s, rhythmic urgency, space—and reimagining them through a cinematic lens. At times the music had to feel tense and intimate, reflecting the environment that birthed the genre. Other moments called for scale and elevation, mirroring how far the culture has reached.

I was especially focused on contrast: grit and polish, minimalism and orchestration, street-level storytelling and global impact. The score doesn’t try to compete with trap music—it exists alongside it, supporting the voices and stories that built it. Every cue was designed to feel intentional, rooted, and respectful of the legacy while still pushing the sound forward.

Being part of this film meant contributing to something bigger than music. It’s a documentation of a movement, and the score plays its part in making sure that movement feels as powerful and real as it truly is.”
